Our Design Process

The starting point depends on the project. 

• Is it an addition or a new build?
• Are there existing drawings or a survey?
• Do you know exactly what you want, or only a rough idea?

We can start from a sketch, photographs, or we can modify existing plans. 

There are always restrictions on the project such as:  

• Available space - distances to neighbors, wells, creeks.
• What's already there - how it's built, it's condition, any demolition needed. 
• Building Code and zoning requirements.
• Budget.

Municipality staff will assist with planning / zoning to help avoid wasted time or effort. For this, only very basic documentation is needed.

Once any planning questions are solved, we can develop a more detailed design.

It is often best to get quotes for construction, and then refine the design if required, before applying for a building permit. 

Where applicable, if a new or upgraded septic system is needed, a permit for that is required before a building permit can be issued.
