Our Capabilities

Is a Designer the same as an Architect or Engineer?

Architects, Engineers and Designers have different capabilities, and so the choice of which to use depends on the project.

For very large projects, such as the design of public infrastructure (bridges, roads) and large buildings (high-rise apartments, concert halls, hospitals), architects and engineers are the only professionals qualified to design the project. This is defined in the Ontario Building Code, where the limits of each role are described.

Designer Qualifications

The Ontario Building Code Act describes the roles of all participants in the planning, design, construction and demolition of buildings in Ontario. The Act specifically defines the role of the designer in section 1.1.(2), and the qualification and registration process for designers - including the need for insurance.

Ian Watson Design is registered in Ontario in accordance with the Building Code Act, and thus has a Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) which is 130362. There is also a personal BCIN of 127041. Registration status for any Ontario designer can be verified here.

Our Capabilities

Ian Watson Design is qualified to conduct House Design. This includes new build, renovations, and additions. But what does that mean exactly?

  • Three or fewer storeys in building height.
  • Building area not exceeding 600sqm
  • Residential occupancy

There are other limits placed on the design in Part 9 of the building code.  The Code defines acceptable construction methods and materials to achieve  safety and comfort levels in buildings. The code covers structural, fire resistance and escape, insulation, ventilation,  damp-proofing, radon protection, minimum room sizes, stair widths, accessibility, etc.

The approved construction methods include thicknesses of walls, materials used, spans of frame members such as joists, beams and lintels, etc.

Complex items in a Design

Sometimes, we need to partner with an engineer on a design project.

A typical example is roof trusses. Our design will show the roof profile, but the detailed design of the trusses will be done by the truss supplier, with engineering stamp of approval attached.

There are other items where engineering design is required, and these are listed in the code. Engineered wood structural products (such as I-beam joists), elements of ICF wall assemblies, and so on. How and when the engineering work is done varies by item.
